Hanmer & District Mothers' Union
Hanmer and District Mothers' Union is one of many in the
diocese of St. Asaph and has been active for many years. We have 23 members, mostly ladies and including 2 gentlemen in our group. Our programme is interesting with a variety of meetings on Wednesday afternoons, usually, mostly at 2.00pm with 10 meetings arranged in the year.
We have a Lunch and AGM in January, 3 local church services, 3 meetings in Glendower Place, Hanmer with a short service and an invited speaker and there is an opportunity to visit St. Asaph Cathedral for a MU Festival Service in March. We have a MU Family Archdeaconry Festival Service in May and this year it will be held at Rossett Church.
In addition, we have a Strawberry Tea in Hanmer Church with a speaker in June and an outing for Afternoon Tea in August. Our meetings and services usually end with tea and biscuits or cake, fellowship and a friendly chat.
There is much kindness, friendship and support to one another in our Hanmer MU group. This reaches out to mothers and families everywhere. Lifts are arranged to meetings when required and visits are made to our elderly members at home.
We support charities during the year such as the Foodbank, Nightingale House Hospice and projects overseas.
Some of our MU members and some kind volunteers meet at Hanmer Church with Hanmer School for 'Know Your Church'. We sing hymns and songs, have prayers and group projects of learning and fun. This takes place on Friday afternoons, by arrangement, a few times in the school year.

History of the Mothers Union
Mary Sumner founded the Mothers' Union in 1876. She was the wife of the Rector in the parish of Old Alresford. Mary witnessed the anxieties and concerns of young mothers and suggested to her husband that maybe the church could have a ministry to help and support mothers and their families. A meeting at the rectory was arranged for mothers of every social class. At that meeting, Mary got cold feet and hadn't the confidence to address the gathering. Her husband suggested the meeting be postponed for a week. A week later, Mary found the courage to address over 40 young mothers, offering the church's support for the spiritual and physical well-being of their families. At that meeting, the 'Union of Mothers' was founded, later changing its name to the Mothers' Union. Today, the Mothers' Union has 4 million members in 83 countries and is a worldwide organisation.
